The Hollow Beech at Hampstead Heath. Generations of families have enjoyed the visual and tactile experience of this iconic local tree. Over the decades I have k...nown it, the tree has suffered great storms, arson and light deficiency. Dysfunctional wood volume decay associated with Ganoderma, Mucidula, Kretzshmaria and Pleurotus, and now the soil is heavily compacted and nutrient poor. We have targeted our time and effort over the last dozen years on reducing the upper and linear canopy to help alleviate wind load and reducing back neighbouring trees to increase light levels. We've now turned our attention to improving soil conditions. (perhaps this could/should have been the focus 10 years ago) The video shows the decompaction and soil amelioration project over the last few days.
